An initiative and a personal invitation, rooted in pride for Jordan and a belief in the mission of peace
My call for His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize did not arise out of nowhere, nor was it simply a passing idea. Rather, it grew from a deeply held personal conviction and from national and professional experiences that I value greatly. Above all, I am a Jordanian citizen proud of my identity and belonging to Jordan. I hold a profound appreciation for my country and for the values of moderation, tolerance and dialogue it represents, as well as its efforts to promote security, stability and a culture of peace.
My conviction behind this personal initiative grew stronger during my time working at the Jordanian embassies in London and Washington. These roles gave me the opportunity to hear a wide range of views and impressions expressed by both official figures and ordinary citizens. I was particularly struck by the words of appreciation and praise for Jordan, and by the respect many people expressed for King Abdullah II and his role in supporting dialogue and understanding, prioritising peaceful solutions, and building bridges of communication among peoples and cultures.
One of the key reasons that strengthened my conviction to move forward with this initiative is Jordan’s continued security, safety and stability, despite being situated in a region marked by persistent tensions, conflicts and wars. In an exceptionally complex regional environment, Jordan has managed to preserve a significant degree of stability through the wise policies pursued by His Majesty King Abdullah II, his emphasis on moderation, dialogue and diplomacy, and Jordan’s strong relations with countries and leaders around the world. This experience has reinforced my belief that wise leadership and relationships built on mutual respect and understanding can help safeguard national stability and strengthen the prospects for peace. I believe this is an additional reason worthy of attention in the context of the call for His Majesty to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize
These encounters left a lasting impression on me. They strengthened my belief that national experiences recognised beyond a country’s borders deserve wider attention and discussion in international forums. This media and personal initiative therefore stems from my conviction that peace is not merely a slogan, but an approach that requires commitment and active support. Highlighting efforts that advance moderation, dialogue and coexistence can help reinforce these values around the world.
Jordan: A Message of Moderation, Dialogue and Interfaith Coexistence
Jordan has long sought to highlight the importance of moderation, dialogue and coexistence among followers of different religions and cultures. Among the notable milestones in this regard is the Amman Message of 2004, which affirmed the values of moderation and tolerance in Islam. Another significant milestone was Jordan’s initiative that led the United Nations General Assembly to adopt World Interfaith Harmony Week in 2010, reflecting the importance of dialogue and understanding among people of different faiths.
These initiatives embody an approach aimed at strengthening mutual respect, fostering a culture of dialogue, and affirming that religious and cultural differences should serve as a gateway to understanding and cooperation rather than a cause of conflict and division.
The Templeton Prize: International Recognition of Efforts to Promote Interfaith Harmony
A notable example of international recognition for these efforts was the awarding of the 2018 Templeton Prize to King Abdullah II. The award recognised his efforts to promote interfaith harmony, protect Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, and safeguard religious freedom.
The John Templeton Foundation highlighted initiatives and efforts connected with these areas, including the Amman Message, the A Common Word initiative, and World Interfaith Harmony Week. The award represents an important milestone in the international recognition of efforts to promote dialogue and understanding among religions and cultures.
In my view, referring to this award is an important part of the context behind my initiative. It reflects international recognition of efforts associated with peace, tolerance and coexistence. This does not mean that receiving one international award automatically qualifies someone for another. Rather, such experiences open the door to a broader discussion about the contributions of leadership and diplomatic efforts to peace and humanity.
A Personal Experience I Witnessed and Helped Bring to Completion
One experience that left a profound impression on me and strengthened my conviction in the importance of dialogue and openness was an initiative whose details I witnessed firsthand and in which I played an active role in helping bring matters to completion. It involved a Jordanian citizen living abroad who held differing views regarding certain government policies.
As part of this experience, contact was made with the citizen to hear his views and proposals. This step reflected the importance of listening to citizens and providing them with an opportunity to express their perspectives, even when their opinions differ from those of the government.
Having witnessed this experience firsthand and contributed to bringing it to completion, I saw the positive impact that direct dialogue and listening to differing viewpoints can have in building trust and fostering mutual understanding. The citizen also expressed his appreciation for this approach, which, in his view, reflected the values of tolerance, openness, and the pursuit of peaceful solutions that His Majesty King Abdullah II demonstrates in his dealings with others, and with Jordanian citizens in particular.
This experience has remained vivid in my memory, not only because I witnessed it and helped bring it to a successful conclusion, but also because it strengthened my firm belief that dialogue is not merely a principle to be declared; it is a practice whose value becomes evident through real-life actions. Respecting and listening to differing viewpoints can provide an important starting point for addressing disagreements and strengthening trust between citizens and the institutions of their state.
A Call for International Attention to the Values of Peace
At its core, my call for King Abdullah II to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize expresses my pride in Jordan, my commitment to my national identity, and my desire to contribute, through my personal and professional role in the media, to sharing a national message in which I firmly believe: the voice of peace and moderation deserves to be heard, and experiences that promote understanding among peoples deserve international attention and recognition.
I also believe that highlighting leaders who support dialogue, tolerance and peaceful solutions can encourage others to embrace these values and help establish peace as a shared responsibility that transcends borders and narrow interests.
In this spirit, Aleumumnews announces the launch of this independent media initiative calling for His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. The initiative also seeks to encourage public and international discussion of what Jordan’s experience can contribute to moderation, dialogue and coexistence among religions and cultures.
This announcement represents a media and personal call for consideration. It does not mean that an official nomination has already been submitted to the relevant Nobel Prize authorities.
